Background | Bacillus anthracis is an endospore-forming bacterium that causes inhalational anthrax. During the course of the disease, endospores are taken up by alveolar macrophages where they germinate in phagolysosomal compartment. Vegetative cells then escape from the macrophage, eventually infecting blood. This strain (96-10355; K1256) is a human isolate from U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases.
