Background Methanococcus vannielii SB (strain SB / ATCC 35089 / DSM 1224) is an archaeon of the phylum Euryarchaeota. This type species of Methanococcus was isolated from a San Francisco Bay mud flat. Unlike other members of the genus which tend to be thermophilic, this species grows only between 20 and 40 degrees Celsius. (HAMAP: METVS)
