Staphylococcus pseudintermedius HKU10-03

Staphylococcus_pseudintermedius
Names Staphylococcus pseudintermedius HKU10-03
Accession numbers NC_014925
Background Staphylococcus pseudintermedius, a resident of the skin and mucosal surfaces of most healthy dogs, is a Gram-positive nonmotile coccus that grows in aerobic and anaerobic conditions, in which it forms grape-like clusters. Staphylococcus pseudintermedius along with the closely related Staphylococcus intermedius and Staphylococcus delphini constitute the S. intermedius group (SIG), with individual species being quite difficult to differentiate phenotypically. Recent epidemiological studies have revealed that S. pseudintermedius and not S. intermedius is the commonest causative agent of canine pyoderma. In addition to pyoderma, S. pseudintermedius has been associated with other canine infections, including wound infections, urinary tract infections, and otitis externa. Infections of humans and other animals with S.pseudintermedius have also been reported. Given the similarities between S.pseudintermedius and Staphylococcus aureus infections in dogs and humans, respectively, knowledge of host adaptation by S.pseudintermedius and the pathogenesis of its infections will potentially have an impact in the areas of public health, infectious diseases, and veterinary medicine. Strain HKU10-03 was isolated from a skin lesion swab of a dog suffering from canine pyoderma (adapted from PMID 21278300). (EBI Integr8)
